Peapod:

Restoring customer
faith by launching
same-day
grocery delivery

In a byte

The booming delivery race saw an online grocery giant, Peapod, trailing behind competition due to its obsolete digital infrastructure. When customers started demanding same-day delivery, Peapod’s 12-hour order processing and 2-day delivery times couldn’t keep up.

What we did

We helped Peapod reduce turnaround times - from days to seconds - and made same-day delivery a reality. By revamping its aging system using Apache Kafka in combination with microservices-based solutions, the company was back in the race.

  • Infrastructure as Code
  • Automated CI/CD Pipelines
  • Data Migration
  • Container Runtime

Peapod’s well-trodden delivery path.

In 1996, Peapod paved the path for online grocery delivery. 20 years later, acting as the digital arm of Ahold Delhaize, one of the USA’s largest grocery retailers, Peapod supported 1.3 billion transactions and 500 million digital offers annually - but on a crumbling infrastructure. Peapod’s well-trodden path needed repair.

While excessive data hand-offs led to 12-hour order processing times, a 1pm cut-off pushed most orders to the next day. And with order volumes greatly increasing, Peapod’s delivery time slowed to 2 days, while competitors Amazon and FreshDirect sprinted past with same-day deliveries.

A true partnership delivers amazing outcomes.

Peapod’s results were delivered through a tight-knit, 19-month partnership. Our team created Proof of Concepts for Peapod’s approval, developed a Minimum Viable Product for review, and established Proof of Delivery for the pivotal relaunch - every decision we made, we made together.

Now, we are ensuring a smooth handoff to Peapod’s internal team through training, team enablement, documentation transfer, and transitional support.

Our journey with Peapod will deliver the customized, supercharged cloud architecture it needs to win the race.

An omnichannel experience turns hours into seconds.

We partnered with Peapod to reimagine its legacy system via Apache Kafka - a natural choice for its ability to handle large-scale messaging - and a microservices-based architecture, which ensured a consistent user experience through differentiated customer journeys. The proposed, modern system was extensively decentralized and its distributed architecture supported expansive data processing.

Equipped with agility, Peapod’s turnaround time went from 12 hours to a few seconds.

Same-day deliveries followed and Peapod regained momentum in the delivery race. We helped its users experience an omnichannel journey that seamlessly duplicated in-person shopping. Here is a breakdown of the direct benefits we provided:

Responsive and resilient back end to support growth.

Lower cost of ownership due to reduced investment.

Increased agility to allow for differentiated customer journeys.

Omni-channel support with the integration of web, cloud, and mobile technologies.

Predictable cost-per-transaction with distributed architecture.
