August 2021 online grocery sales jumped near all-time highs from earlier this year. Even as Covid cases eased this summer, online grocery sales remain at 3-4X pre-pandemic levels.
Consumers continue to prefer delivery or pick up over ship-to-home due to the convenience, predictability, and flexibility of choosing shipping or pickup windows as soon as 30 minutes after placing an order. That said, ship-to-home experienced an immediate bump too as that delivery method nears all-time highs as well.
Moving forward, expect to see the virtuous cycle start to kick in: more consumers shopping online, the technology and experience of buying and picking up or receiving groceries at home get better, word of mouth accelerates and before long, a short-term fad gives way to a long term trend.
